The NRA has won. For years the American public wanted gun control and could not get it, apparently because the National Rifle Association (NRA), the arm of the gun industry owned congress.
According to a Pew Research Center Report, in the year 2000, only 29% of the public felt it was more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns than to control gun ownership. Yet, we had a loosening of gun regulations, rather than tightening. In 2016, the proportion who felt this way had jumped to 52%.
Apparently, the increase in the proportion of people against gun control is the result of propaganda work by the NRA, pushing the importance of the second amendment and gun rights, while the gun manufacturers kept racking up huge profits on gun sales.
Now that the NRA has successfully fought off all attempts to have Congress do the public’s will and legislate real gun control, they may not have to fight as hard anymore, because they have convinced the public as well as Congress to do their bidding.
