The current border wall issue offers an excellent example of Democrats failing to make their case. In the usual budgeting process last fall, the White House requested Congress to provide $1.6 billion in border security funding. The House and then the Senate passed a budget including this $1.6 billion. Then goaded by right-wing media people like Rush Limbaugh, Trump changed his mind, refused to sign the legislation, and asked for $5.6 billion.
The Democratic leaders are refusing this new request, but in typical fashion, they do not explain those simple facts, something they should do several times each day. They should make it clear that they honored Trump’s regular request—and in a bipartisan way as it happened before Democrats gained control of the House.
